Eaton 9PX Lithium-Ion UPS: Is the Premium Worth It for Philippine Data Rooms?
The Eaton 9PX has long been the benchmark for rack-mounted double-conversion UPS in Philippine data rooms and server closets. The newer lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery variant changes the economics of that benchmark significantly — not always in the direction buyers expect.
The higher upfront cost of the Li-ion 9PX is real. So is the 5-year payback case for Philippine deployments. Whether the premium makes sense depends on where and how the UPS will be used.
What the Eaton 9PX Li-Ion Is
The 9PX is a true online double-conversion UPS — incoming mains power is continuously converted to DC and back to clean AC, so the load never runs directly on the grid. Zero transfer time, complete isolation from brownouts, sags, surges, and frequency variation. This is the correct architecture for servers, NAS arrays, CCTV recording systems, and any load where even a 2ms switchover causes a restart.
The Li-ion variant replaces the sealed lead-acid (SLA) battery modules with lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry. The UPS electronics are unchanged — the difference is entirely in the battery system.
Available in rack-mount (1U and 2U) and tower configurations from 1000VA to 3000VA for the standard range, with extended battery modules (EBMs) available for longer runtime targets.

A 1500VA 9PX with SLA weighs approximately 23kg. The Li-ion equivalent weighs around 12kg — a 48% reduction. It affects what can physically be installed and how safely.
2. Battery Lifespan
SLA batteries in Philippine environments typically last 3 to 4 years before capacity degrades to replacement threshold. 3. Recharge Speed
After a power event that depletes the battery, an SLA 9PX requires 4–8 hours to return to full charge. During that window, protection is degraded — another outage draws from a partially charged battery.
The Li-ion 9PX reaches 80% charge in approximately 15 minutes under normal conditions. In typhoon season, when successive brownouts and brief outages can occur within hours of each other, recharge speed is operationally significant.
4. Operating Temperature Tolerance
Li-ion chemistry operates safely at higher ambient temperatures than SLA. The 9PX Li-ion is rated to 40°C ambient operation without derated performance. Elevated racks and raised floor environments — the weight reduction matters for floor loading and for the practical ability to handle modules during maintenance.

Where SLA Remains the Right Choice
